Abstract

<PICT:0594384/IV/1> Apparatus for advancing and spacing artificial filaments and threads during treatment in a limited space and providing a self-threading action comprises at least two rollers 1, which may be cylindrical (as shown) or conical, on parallel axes 2 rotating at the same angular velocity in the same direction, at least one of the rollers being formed with ridged portions 3 with their ends smoothed away and disposed so that the grooves therebetween constitute discontinuous screw-threads, the radius of any point at the bottom 5 of a groove being equal to that of the unridged portion 6 of the roller in the plane of rotation containing the said point. The grooved portions preferably all lie as shown in the same segment of the roller. The direction of rotation of the rollers for right-handed screw-threads is anti-clockwise when viewed from the end where the thread is fed on, and for left-handed threads is clockwise. The distance apart of the rollers is adjusted so that when a closed loop of thread is formed around the rollers and in one of the grooves, rotation of the rollers causes the loop to enter successive grooves until it comes off the ends of the rollers, when it is picked up and the thread end led away over a suitable guide, the oncoming thread 8 being spaced in the grooves as shown. The closed loop may be in the form of a noose, or may be formed by wrapping the thread several times around the rollers in the same groove. If the roller system comprises two rollers only, as shown, the length of the grooved portions may be up to half a turn.
