Abstract

The apparatus claimed in Specification 643,516 is modified by employing two idler <PICT:0656630/IV (a)/1> rolls 22, 24 fixed in relation to the driving roll 23, each idler roll having the shape of a right circular cylinder over a part of its length and a portion tapering towards a point, so as to facilitate stringing up. The tapered portions may rotate with the idler rolls, or be held stationary, and helical grooves moving from the end of the rolls towards the cylindrical parts may be formed in the tapered portions. The diameter of the driving roll 23 may be reduced adjacent to the tapered portions of the idler rolls 22, 24.
