Abstract

A painting roller includes a hollow roller slotted lengthwise to provide for its contraction and resiliently resisting contraction, a shaft disposed axially of the roller and having mounted thereon a pair of elements such as caps engaged with the ends of the roller for mounting the same rotatively on the shaft, and a tubular work-engaging member fitted over and effecting contraction of the roller, the roller having reductions of its diameter at its ends for facilitating an endwise mounting of the work-engaging member on the roller. Referring to the drawing, a roller 1 slotted from end to end, 2, and with frusto-conical <PICT:0691265/III/1> slotted shoulders 7 is placed under compression by applying caps 5 to the extremities, and a tube 3 of fibrous material slipped thereover. The caps 5 are centrally apertured to engage shaft 9 on which the roller is journalled In a modification the roller is not slotted end to end but has two slots each extending over half the roller length and spirally extending from opposite ends at 180 degrees apart.
