Abstract

<PICT:0887761/III/1> A paint roller comprises a shaft, rotatable support means associated with the shaft for enabling a tubular applicator to be slid over the support means and frictionally maintained thereon, and actuating means for releasing the frictional grip whereupon the applicator is free to drop off the shaft and support means. As shown, the shaft or spindle 18 carries a rotatable end cap 26 maintained thereon by a screw 34. Maintained at the other end of the spindle 18 by a spacer 50 is a cam sleeve 36 having bevelled portions 46 engaging the inner surfaces of the ends of fingers 58 extending from the portion 54 of a hollow cylindrical support 52 on which the tubular applicator 20 is slid, and gripped by the fingers 58. The support 52 is slidable axially on the cam sleeve 36 against a spring 72, when an actuating lever 80, pivoted at 84, is operated. A circular spring 62 then urges the fingers 58 together, releasing their grip on the applicator 20.
