Abstract

925,596. Handling radio-active material. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. June 23, 1961 [June 23, 1960], No. 22111/60. Class 39 (4). [Also in Group XXIII] Tongs for handling a radiation source tube comprises a fixed hand grip portion 1 connected to a hollow shaft 4 through which extends a rod 3 connected to a hand grip portion 2 pivoted on grip portion 1 whereby the rod may be axially moved. The shaft 4 is attached to a sleeve 5 receiving a sliding member 6, bellcrank levers 7, 8 being pivotally connected at 15, 16 to the member 6 and at 17 to an adaptor 19 at the end of the rod 3. A spring 24 acting between a cap 25 of the sleeve 5 and a block 26 abutting the adaptor 19 urges the parts towards the end 12 of the sleeve 5. The member 6 is guided for limited sliding movement by screws 20, 21 extending through slots 22, 23 in the sleeve 5. In operation the levers 7, 8 are passed over the flanged end cap of the source tube (Fig. 6, not shown), slots 28, 29 in the sleeve 5 permitting this action, the hand grips 1, 2 then being squeezed together so that the levers engage the cap, further squeezing of the grips causing the member 6 to be retracted against the action of the spring 24 so that the end of the source tube abuts the sleeve end 12.
