Abstract
825,553. Remotely controlled tongs. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Feb. 15, 1957 (Feb. 16, 1956], No. 4829/56. Class 61. An adaptor, Fig. 2, for connecting tongs, Fig. 1, to the hand grip operating device described in Specification 825,552 for remotely operating the tongs, comprises tube members 19, 20 fastened together co-axially end to end a plunger 22 being slidably mounted therein and held in retracted position by a compression spring 29. The end of the tube 19. has bayonet slots 27 which are adapted to engage with pins 28 in the tubular part 2 of the tongs. The end of the outer tube of the hand grip rod operating device is in the form of a bayonet plug having bayonet slots adapted to engage with pins 25 in a socket in the member 20, the rod device being held in the socket by a spring loaded washer 26. The rod of the operating device extends into the tube 20 and engages the plunger 22. A driving pin 23 which passes diametrically through the plunger 22 extends through two longitudinal slots 24 in the member 19 the pin 23 engaging in recesses 30 in the slider 14 and extending through slots 15 in the tubular part 2 of the tongs when the adaptor is connected to the tongs. The jaws 4 of the tongs have parallel movement and are closed by forward movement of the slider 14 on the tubular part 2. When it is required to detach the adaptor from the tongs, the jaws 4 are held in closed position, -supported on dowels fitted into holes 31.
