Abstract

1,080,216. Hand tool handles. H. WHITEHEAD. Oct. 6, 1965 [Oct. 7, 1964], No. 40949/64. Heading B4K. A handle adjustable in length comprises two or more telescopically arranged tubes 1, 2, 3 in which the relatively inner end of each tube is provided with a plug 4 of cork or resilient plastics material and the corresponding coacting ends of the relatively outer tubes are split, each split end carrying a sleeve 6 movable axially on the split part to cause either locking or unlocking of the parts according to the direction of movement of the sleeve. The plug 4 may incorporate a projecting head whose diameter corresponds to the diameter of the coacting tube, but in a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the head of the inserts are adapted to be expanded relatively to the coacting supporting tube by a nut and washer assembly, Fig. 4 (not shown). The inserts may form press fits within the coacting tubes or they may be secured in position as by rivets or by the use of adhesive or bonding.
