Abstract

1,222,448. Propelling pencil. MERMAID ENG. CO. Ltd. 4 Nov., 1969 [4 Nov., 1968], No. 52145/68. Heading B6P. A propelling pencil comprises a tube 13, internally threaded at one end, the threads 14 of the tube engaging threads 15 of a cylindrical element 16 formed from plastics and moulded around the end of a wire 31, which wire serves to project the lead (not illustrated). The threads 15 of the element 16 are only on one half of its cylindrical surface. An operating rod 19 is of arcuate cross-section and of such a radius that it will fit between the unthreaded portion of the element 16 and the inner wall of the threaded tube 13 so that rotation of the rod 19 by a knob 20 causes the element 16 also to rotate and hence move axially relatively to the tube 13 and the rod 19. The knob 20 has a gripping piece 22 and a tubular portion 23 of smaller diameter than the rest of the knob 20. The tubular portion is formed with an annular flange 17 at the extremity thereof, which flange co-operates with a circumferential groove 30 formed in a flexibly resilient plastics sleeve 24. The knob 20 and rod 19 are mounted for rotational, non-axial movement by the plastics sleeve 24 which fits over the outside of the tube 13. The sleeve 24 is split by two longitudinally extending diametrically opposed cuts 28 into two jaws 29. The pencil casing 11, when fitted over the end of a tube 33 carried by the sleeve 24, engages with bosses 59 on the jaws 29, so that the jaws 29 grip the knob 20 to prevent its easy rotation. A guide within which the pencil lead is movable longitudinally includes a tube 41 and blade 50 of resilient material of cylindrical shape and formed with conical indentations 51 at its opposite ends. The indentations guide the lead into a puncture 52 extending between the apices 53 of the indentations. The lead is held by the resilience of the material until urged through the puncture by movement of the wire 31 or direct movement of the lead by an external force. Compartments 34 defined by the tube 33 carried by the sleeve 24 are utilized for carrying spare leads. An annular stopper 35 is fitted over the end 38 of an extension tube 36 fitted tightly into the threaded tube 13.
