[Class 146 (iii)] A propelling pencil comprises propelling and expelling mechanism in which a lead-gripping tube slides against the action of a spring on a driving rod which is adapted to engage a threaded sleeve, and in which the tube is arrested by an abutment inside the tip at its forward limit of motion, and the sleeve is supported inside the barrel by a longitudinally fluted member forming a star-shaped reservoir for spare leads. Secured to the end of a driving rod j is a crosshead k, which passes through a slotted tube g and engages a threaded sleeve d. The sleeve d is secured to the pencil barrel a by a longitudinally grooved tube f. A lead-holding tube h is slidably mounted on the rod j and is provided with a collar m which serves to guide it in the tube g ; between the collar m and the crosshead k lies a spiral spring l. The forward end of the tube h is flattened to prevent rotation of the flat rod j, and two tongues h<1> are bent down to engage in a slot o in the rod to prevent the spring l from forcing the rod out of the tube h.
