Abstract

Pencil holders; erasers.-In a screw-propelling pencil holder, the screw-threaded feed tube is extended beyond the lower end of the outer casing and is arranged to act as a clutch for the lead. The lead-holding tube projects beyond the upper end of the casing and is rotated by an eraser ferrule, the lead-holding tube passing through and being crimped over a restricted portion of the ferrule. The screw-threaded tube may also project beyond the upper end ef the casing and serve as a guide for the ferrule. As shown in Fig. 1, the feed tube B is secured by friction or adhesive in a casing A preferably formed as described in Specification 242,709, and its projecting lower end is tapered to form a guide tip B" for the lead. The lead-holding tube C is of slightly larger diameter than the lead, and is split at the front end and formed with an internal projection C" serving as a further support for the lead, the segments of the split end being arranged to bite into the lead to prevent rotation. The follower J is preferably formed from a piece of wire having a flattened sinuous portion forming extensions which pass through a longitudinal slot in the tube C into engagement with the screw.-threads on the tube B. The rear end of the tube C is secured to a cup-shaped member D' locked to an eraser ferrule E so that the rotation of the ferrule results in the propulsion or retraction of the follower J. At its rear end the tube B is formed, at a short distance from its end, with a number of longitudinal slits Q, and with an internal rib R acting as a clutch for the lead. A swollen portion S' in the tip serves as a bearing for the tube C. In a modification of the mounting of the eraser ferrule, the feed tube B terminates with the. casing, and the restricted portion of the ferrule is engaged by the crimpedover end of the tube G is lengthened to aid in maintaining the parts in alignment.
