Abstract
165,437. Fischer, H. L. June 24, 1920, [Convention date]. Pencil-holders.-A screw-propelled pencil is provided with means for varying the screw thread engagement of the carrier in the holder when pressure is put upon the projected lead. As shown the lead carrier 18, Fig. 6, is located in a slotted driving-member 16 and has a flat thin body portion notched at 19 to engage threads 20 on a tubular member 11 rigidly secured at its ends to the pencil barrel 10. At its rear end the lead-carrier is formed with a spring finger or tongue 24 which keeps the threaded parts yieldingly in engagement, the forward end of the driver being provided with a lead-receiving socket 26 at the end of a spring finger 25 which also serves to keep the parts in frictional engagement. Excessive pressure on the lead causes the lead-carrier to vield and slip over the threads on the member 11, the lead being returned to its housed position. The forward end of the slot in the driving-member is closed by bending down the lip 22, the rear end being provided with an operating-head 21. To indicate the length of lead remaining in the holder, the driving-member is pulled out until the lip contacts with the notched portion of the carrier, and in this position the distance between the rear end of the pencil barrel and the operating-head is a measure of the lead remaining. An audible click is heard at the limit of travel of the lead-carrier in either direction. The lead-carrier and driving-member are removable together.
