Abstract

1,155,385. Heat treating filaments. T.M.M. (RESEARCH) Ltd. 18 Aug., 1966 [27 Aug., 1965], No. 36943/65. Heading B5B. Apparatus for treating a travelling filament comprises two spaced driven rollers 11, 12, about which the filament 22 is passed in a succession of loops, and filament heating means 13 situated between the two rollers, the arrangement being such that the path length of a filament loop at the feed end 23, 24 is greater than that at the delivery end 25. This may be achieved by using rollers with at least a portion thereof, 20, being frusto-conical, and the remainder, 21, being cylindrical; alternatively, continuously tapering rollers may be used. The tapering portion may be grooved or smooth, and the axes of the rollers may be inclined or parallel. When tapered/cylindrical rolls are used the filament becomes heat-set in its passage over the cylindrical portion, after shrinking in passing over the tapered portion.
