Abstract
1347510 Drawing and crimping tows TEIJIN Ltd 3 Sept 1971 [7 Sept 1970] 41265/71 Heading B5B [Also in Division D1] In a method of advancing tows and displacing at least one tow to overlap the other tow or tows, the tows are advanced through apparatus comprising the last rollers 2 of a drawing machine and the nip roller 4, 4<SP>1</SP> of a stuffer-box crimper; arranged between the rollers 2 and 4, 4<SP>1</SP> there are at least two guide cylinders 3b, 3b<SP>1</SP> preferably parallel to each other, but non- parallel to the rollers 2 and 4, 4<SP>1</SP>, the cylinder and rollers being so arranged that for each adjacent station along the work-path, the line where the tows depart from the more downstream roller or cylinder is in the same plane as the line where the tows arrive at the more upstream roller or cylinder. The tows are looped not more than once about each guide cylinder and conveyed between the rollers 2 and nip roller 4, 4<SP>1</SP> such that at least one tow is displaced to overlap the other tow or tows such that when projected on to a plane including both the line where the tows arrive at the nip rollers and the line where the tows arrive at the last roller of the rollers 2, the directions of motion of the tow upstream of both the rollers 2 and nip rollers 4, 4<SP>1</SP> are parallel. In a preferred embodiment, the tow (e.g. of polyester filaments) passes over the draw rollers 5, then over heated rollers or a heater plate 6, the last rollers 2 and then on to guide cylinders 3. The tow is divided into subtows at the guide cylinders, which subtows are laterally offset by the guide cylinders to overlap each other at the nip rollers 4, 4<SP>1</SP>. The angle the axis of the guide cylinders 3b, 3b<SP>1</SP> make with the axis of the roller 2 may be adjustable to vary the lateral offset of the tow, also the horizontal distance between the guide cylinders may be adjustable for the same purpose.
