Abstract
907,299. Filter-tips. EASTMAN KODAK CO. Nov. 7, 1958 [Nov. 7, 1957], No. 35787/58. Class 130. [Also in Groups VIII and IX] Filter-tips are made from a tow comprising parallel crimped continuous filaments, the crimps in any one filament being out of register with those of adjacent filaments. The filaments may be of cellulose acetate with an acetyl content of 38-41%, a denier of 2-16, and more than 4 crimps per inch. The tow may be made by subjecting a tow of 20,000-250,000 of such filaments conditioned with a lubricant such as mineral oil, to a first tension to stretch the filaments and temporarily remove the crimps, applying a second tension to different lengths of adjacent filaments to maintain the crimps in straightened condition whereby the crimps in adjacent filaments are drawn out of register with one another, and relaxing the tension to restore the crimps in out-of-registry condition. In Fig. 2 a tow 15 having been opened by air-jets at 16 is passed between two pairs of rubber-covered rollers at 19, 22, the first pair being braked so that the filaments are tensioned; it is then conducted to a further pair of rollers 26, 27 positioned at an angle to the others and thence to a second opener 31 and a chamber where droplets of plasticizer (examples given) are deposited at random intervals along each filament. The tow is conducted by rollers 35 to a former 37 of the filter-rod device of Fig. 5. Here the tow is laid on a wrapper on an endless belt which has been made into U-form at 46; the wrapper is lapped around the tow at 47 leaving one edge 48 standing which is coated with adhesive at 49, smoothed over at 51 and sealed by heat at 52. The rod is heated at 54 to cause the filaments to bond at the points to which plasticizer was applied, and severed at intervals at 55.
