O HEREBY DECLARE the nature of this invention and in what manner the same is to be performed to be particularly described and ascertained in and by the following statement :
This invention provides apparatus for processing crimped yarn,
The invention comprises apparatus for processing crimped yarn comprising pressure applying means between which the crimped yarn can be passed so that the individual filaments thereof are permanently altered in cross-section with consequent alteration of their load—extension
Said pressure applying means may comprise pressure applying rollers, and may be adapted to heat the yarn passing therebetween.
The apparatus may comprise heating means adapted to heat the yarn before it passes between said pressure applying means. The apparatus may also comprise means for overfeeding the yarn to said pressure applying means, and wind-up means for the yarn fed from said pressure applying means
The apparatus may be combined with a yarn crimping, for example, false twist crimping, apparatus for continuous operation on a crimped yarn produced thereby.
One embodiment of apparatus according to the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, which is a diagrammatic illustration.
A crimped yarn 10 is advanced by feed rollers 11 (-which may be the output feed rollers of a false twist crimping machine) towards a pair of pressure applying rollers 12· At least one roller of each set 11, 12 is driven in rotation and the peripheral speeds of the two sets are capable of being selected in accordance with
the desired extension condition of the yarn 1·
between them, A heater k , which may be of the electrically heated curved plate type, is located between the two sets of rollers 11, 12 and the yarn can be heated thereby for example to
develop latent crimp. The yarn 10 leaving the rollers 12 is wound up in wind-up means 15«
The pressure rollers 12 are of a wear
resistant, hard material such as steel which is not subject to scoring by the yarn. One, 12a
of the rollers, is fixed on a rotary shaft 13
which may extend the full length of a false twist (or other) crimping machine and carry a plurality of other such rollers. The other roller 12b is carried on hydraulic ram means 16 mounted on a bracket 17 of the machine and urged thereby
against the roller 12ει, The pressure which these rollers exert on a yarn is controllable by adjusting the pressure of the hydraulic fluid and, in a multi—station machine, the pressure applied by all the pressure applying rollers can be adjusted
from a single source of hydraulic pressure.
Other arrangements, for example, spring or weight loading means, could be used instead of the hydraulic arrangement just described.
The pressure rollers 12 can be arranged to heat the yarn 10 passing between them, by being electrically heated for example by resistance heating elements buried in them.
