Abstract

1,211,022. Filament tension equalizing apparatus. TEIJIN Ltd. 6 Nov., 1967 [5 Nov., 1966], No. 50415/67. Heading B5B. [Also in Divisions D1-D2] In a method of equalizing the tensions of subtows of synthetic thermoplastic filaments having different tensions and running along parallel paths before they are gathered into a single tow which may then be drawn, each sub-tow is subjected to a particular resistance by a particular degree of deflection from its path of travel such that the tensions of the sub-tows thereafter are equal. As shown, sub-tows 1 removed from cans 2 are guided in parallel relationship by hooks 3 fitted to rods 4, or by rollers (not shown), and then, in passing between additional guides 6 and 7, are individually deflected by rings 9 of guides 10 each adjustably positioned on a support rod 8 so as to cause a required degree of deflection in inverse relation to each associated sub-tow tension. Guides 10 may be replaced by a single plate (12) providing a row of holes for separate guidance of the sub-tows and pivotally mounted on a support 5 so that the angle formed between the plate and a horizontal plane may be adjustably varied by movement of a hand wheel transmitting through worm gearing. In examples, 30 sub-tows of undrawn polyethylene terephthalate filaments are gathered into one tow by means of the apparatus of Fig. 1, and then drawn in hot water or steam, crimped by stuffing and heat-relaxed.
