Abstract

1,150,761. Bundles of coalesced nylon filaments. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 27 Feb., 1967 [14 March, 1966], No. 11070/66. Heading B5B. [Also in Division D1] The filaments of a compact bundle-e.g. a yarn or tow-of continuous polyamide filaments in substantially parallel contiguous relation, are attached to one another by autogenous bonding -i.e. without extraneous bonding agentsbetween adjacent filaments at closely-spaced, random regions along and through the bundle and have a disoriented peripheral region. As described the bonding is accomplished by passing the bundle through a chamber of superatmospheric steam to render the surfaces of the filaments tacky, with the temperature of the steam, and the tension and exposure time of the filaments being controlled to obtain the required bonding. The filaments contract while passing through the chamber. The filaments may be drawn immediately before the compacting. The bundle may be twisted before or after the compacting.
