Abstract

1,209,803. De-registering tow. TURBO MACHINE CO. 7 Oct., 1968 [25 Oct., 1967], No. 47382/68. Heading D1F. Apparatus for de-registering crimped tow comprises means 18 for longitudinally advancing a multifilament tow sheet 10, means 14 for frictionally gripping the tow sheet at spaced intervals transversely thereof in advance of the advancing means 18, and means 13 immediately in advance of the gripping means for reciprocating the tow sheet transversely as it moves to the friction means 14. The friction means 14 comprises a pair of rollers at least one of which is provided with circumferential grooves and ridges, the other preferably having a covering of resilient material e.g. hard rubber. The reciprocating means comprises a circumferentially grooved and ridged roller which is reciprocated axially by means of a lever connected to a dowble-acting pneumatic piston and cylinder. The reversal of the reciprocation may be synchronised to the rotation of the rollers in the friction means 14 by means of a cam secured to one of the said rollers. The filaments of the crimped tow are partially de-registered by the reciprocating means 13 and further de-registered by the friction means 14. In a further embodiment, two tow sheets are passed through their respective reciprocating, friction and advancing means, and then brought together for further processing e.g. cutting into staple length fibres.
