Abstract
951,893. Felt-needling machines. W. BYWATER Ltd, and BRENDAN BYRNE. Jan. 24,1963 [Jan. 24,1962], No.2738/62. Heading D1R. A needle punching machine in which the felt F is drawn between a needle bed 4 and reciprocating needles 12 in a path at right angles to the direction of the reciprocation of the needles, includes means for reciprocating the felt F in the needling area in directions transverse to the direction of travel of the felt through the machine. The needle bed 4 is mounted on jacks 3 and carries feed and draw rollers 5, 6, respectively, which are intermittently rotatable. The needle board 11 is mounted on a needle arm 10 and is reciprocated vertically by an eccentric mechanism 14 on a shaft 35. Each roller 5, 6, is mounted on a shaft 17, Fig. 2, by bearings 18 in a housing 19 having two arms 20 secured to rods 21 which slide in bearings 23 secured to the bed 4. Each shaft 17 is connected to a co-axial drive shaft 24 by a sleeve 25 screwed on to the shaft 17 and having a pin 28 extending through a diametrical slot 26 in the shaft 24 so that the shaft 17 can be rotated by the shaft 24 and can also move axially over a short distance. Each shaft 24 is intermittently rotated through a ratchet 30 having a pawl arm 31,the two arms 31 being connected by a rod 32 and one arm 31 having an auxiliary arm 31X connected by a rod 33 to a crank device 34 driven by the shaft 35. A ratchet 38 and a pawl 39 prevent reverse rotation of the shaft 24 and a spring-pressed plate-type friction brake 40 is also provided. Each shaft 17 is connected by bearings 41, Figs.2 and 4, to a yoke 42 secured to a housing 43, Figs.2 and 3, which slides on a shaft 44 on which two cam rings 45 are keyed. Runners 47 on pins 48 secured to the housing 43 engage grooves 46 so that rotation of the shaft 44 causes the housing 43 and thus rollers 5, 6 to reciprocate. The shaft 44 is intermittently rotated through a ratchet 50 engaged by a curved pawl 51 driven by a rod 52 from the shaft 52 via a crank device 53. A ratchet 55 and a pawl 54 prevent reverse rotation of the shaft 44. The reciprocation of the rollers 5,6 takes place simultaneously with the feed movement of the felt F between consecutive strokes of the needle board 11. Alternatively, the reciprocating movement may be continuous. In a modification (not shown), instead of being fed by a roller, the felt is fed by a travelling sheet or sheets the supports of which are reciprocated transversely.
