Abstract
1,245,103. Tufting-machines. MERCHANT INVENTORS Ltd. and L. M. BALLAMY. 18 June, 1969 [29 July, 1968], No. 36000/68. Heading D1G. In a tufting machine a looper 27 and cutter 17 are interconnected in such a manner that oscillatory cutting motion of the cutter imparts corresponding oscillatory looping motion of the looper. As shown in fig. 1 the cutter has two arms 15, 16 fixedly mounted on a tubular sleeve 14 which is rotatably mounted on a shaft 12. A block 21 is held in a yoke on the driving arm 16 and engages a rotary eccentric on a shaft in the bed of the machine, rotation of the eccentric thus producing a cutting motion of the cutter 17 and cutting blade 18. The looper 27 is mounted by a screw 28 to a shaft 25 mounted on a sleeve 24 on a looper axle 22. A pin 34 extends through a flanged block 35 slidingly mounted in a rectangular aperture 19 in the cutter arm and passes through a slot in the looper blade to engage the looper shaft 25. Thus when the cutter arm is moved the block 35 is caused to move the looper 17. A wiping contact to produce a cutting effect between the looper and cutter is ensured by a spring 36 and the looper is adjustable against the action of a compression spring on the axle 22 to set its position relative to the needle. The work is fed by rotating wheels which engage the upper surface thereof and are driven by an oscillating bar 74 through a free wheel device 75 and bands 92 in synchronism with the needle operation of the machine such that the work is stationary when the needle penetrates therethrough. The bar 74 is oscillated from a crank 72 on the main upper needle bar drive shaft and an adjusting bar 83 is connected to the bar 74 by a sleeve 85 and this varies the feeding movement of the wheels. The freewheel 75 comprises a cam and roller arrangement which only drives in one direction of oscillation of the bar 74. The feeding wheels have toothed edges to engage the work. A throat plate 54 is provided which may be positionally adjusted by means of a thumb nut 57.
