Abstract

1,267,300. Layering fabric. FAB-CON MACHINERY DEVELOPMENT CORP. 15 July, 1970, No. 34358/70. Heading D1S. Apparatus for layering a fabric web comprises an upper shaft 7 rotatably journalled in spaced side frames 5, means for rotating the shaft 7, a draw roll 9 mounted on the shaft 7, a reciprocable traversing roll assembly 20 supported by the frames 5 beneath the roll 9 and parallel thereto, a first clutch-controlled sprocket and chain drive 11, 18, 16 extending between the shaft 7 and the assembly 20 for traversing the same in one direction, a second clutch-controlled sprocket and chain drive 12, 21, 17 extending between the shaft 7 and the assembly 20 for traversing the same in the opposite direction, and means for causing the clutch-controlled drives to operate alternately whereby to reciprocate the assembly 20. In operation, a driving sprocket 8 for the shaft 7 is connected to an independent drive or to driving elements of a processing unit from which the fabric is being discharged, the speed of roll 9 being slightly greater than that of the fabric. The fabric is fed over the roll 9 and between rolls 22 of the assembly 20 and into a receptacle. A pneumatically operated clutch 10, Fig. 11, is engaged to drive the roll 9 and either a clutch 13 or a clutch 14 engaged depending upon which of a pair of exhaust valves 32, 34, Fig. 3, was last operated. Both clutches 13, 14 are pneumatically operated. Assuming the clutch 13 is engaged, a sprocket 11 is driven to drive a chain 18 and sprockets (16), (19), Fig. 2 (not shown), to cause the assembly 20 to be driven from right to left of Fig. 3, the chain 18 being connected to a stud 24, Fig. 5, on a carriage 23 of the assembly 20. When a cam 30 on the carriage 23 depresses an element 31 of the valve 32 at the end of that traverse stroke, that valve opens to disengage the clutch 13. The clutch 14 is engaged and drives a sprocket 12 to drive a chain 21 and sprockets 17 to drive the assembly 20 from the left to right of Fig. 3; the chain 21 being connected to a second stud 24. When the cam 30 depresses an element 33 of the valve 34 the direction of traverse is again reversed. A pneumatic circuit for the operation is described, Fig. 7 (not shown).
