[Also in Divisions B8 and D1-D2] Running, flexible, elongated material e.g. yarns, threads, cables, tows of continuous filaments, is stored and continuously advanced at relatively slow speed through a treatment zone e.g. for coagulating, liquid application or impregnation, stretching or relaxing, or setting, without interruption of the general flow line by apparatus wherein the material is positively and successively displaced laterally of its line of travel at discrete intervals of time as it passes a given station so as to form a succession of loops, each successive loop being completed before the next is begun, and the loops are maintained for a determined period. As shown, yarn 17 is continuously fed to and engaged by successive fixed guides 11 carried on a rotating disc 10 and, in the yarn entry zone, guides 11a, angularly off-set from guides 11 and carried on a disc 10a concentric and rotating with disc 10, are periodically advanced by a fixed cam (21) and then retracted by return springs so as to interdigitate with guides 11, seize the entering yarn 17 and pull it into successive loops which travel around the periphery of the discs, whilst undergoing treatment, to a point of withdrawal. In other embodiments, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the entering yarn is projected by an air current, or conveyed by collecting forks carried on an endless travelling band, laterally across a drum and is engaged by spaced peripheral edge members to form and retain yarn loops on the drum. The apparatus may be provided with a co-operating heated serrated drum for crimping the yarn.
