Abstract

1,182,968. Opening tow. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 3 Oct., 1967 [3 Oct., 1966], No. 44906/67. Heading D1F. 225,000 to 2,000,000 denier tow of crimped non-elastomeric filaments is opened (so as to render the tow suitable for direct tow-to-sliver conversion with " subsequent " cotton system drafting and spinning) by passing the tow around a curved needled surface moving at 1.1 to 15 times the feed speed of the tow. The surface may be comprised by a needled roller, by a needled roller on each side of the tow at spaced points, or by a needled belt. The roller described has a needled surface with the needles arranged in rows of possibly different needle frequency, diameter, and length, examples of which are given, or may have bars of needles extending between the flanges of the roller with an endless film looped over rods mounted between the bars and under rods mounted below the needled bars. The tow may be of a polyamide, polyester, polyolefin, an acrylic polymer, or a cellulosic material.
