Abstract

1,185,623. Bonded textile yarns. BONDINA Ltd. 27 April, 1967 [30 April, 1966], No. 19090/66. Heading B5B. [Also in Division D1] A method of forming a bonded structure of first fibres comprising polyamide or polyester fibres or both, comprises forming a mixture of these first fibres with second fibres of a polyamide whose melting point in the presence of water is reduced and is lower than the melting point in the presence of water of the first fibres, steaming the structure at a temperature between the melting points in the presence of water of the first and second fibres, and thereby melting the second fibres while leaving the first fibres substantially unaffected, and cooling the structure and thereby solidifying the polyamide of the second fibres as welds between the first fibres. The structure may be in the form of an elongated mass of small cross-sectional area so as to form, after the steam treatment, an adherent product similar to a yarn or roving with or without twists. The first fibres may include nylon 6 fibres, nylon 66 fibres, and cellulosic fibres, the structure suitably containing from 5 to 25% by weight of the second fibres, especially 15% by weight thereof. Steaming may be conducted using steam which is under elevated pressure and is at the said temperature, and may result in the second fibres melting and retracting into globules. Steaming may be carried out with or without compaction, depending upon the shape, form or bulk density required. Examples are given.
