Abstract

The invention comprises a device and a method for opening a crimped continuous filament tow. The device comprises a pair of back rollers and a pair of front rollers, means for passing the filament tow between the pairs of rollers so that the tow is under tension and a porcupine roller the needles of which penetrate the tow between the two pairs of rollers, and means for driving the pair of back rollers, the pair of front rollers and the porcupine roller at peripheral speeds in the ratios 1:1.2 to 2:.65 to .82. The filament tow 8 passes round a tension roller 4 between a first pair of driven rollers 1, 1' then between a pair of upper rollers 7 and an endless belt 6 over a porcupine roller 3, between the second pair of driven rollers 2, 2' then over a roller 5. Two devices may be combined. The rollers may be independently driven.
