Abstract

<PICT:0391443/IV/1> <PICT:0391443/IV/2> <PICT:0391443/IV/3> <PICT:0391443/IV/4> In the dry spinning of artificial filaments, yarns, &c., in particular of cellulose acetate, liquid is applied to the filaments &c. during their drying, especially during the early part of their travel, by means of a freely-mounted roller or other rotatable device irrigated or fed with liquid. The roller 9 is preferably made of light material such as aluminium, resins &c., and it may be provided with grooves 28, Figs. 3 and 6, which guide the filaments and may be proportioned to control the amount of liquid supplied to them. Liquid may be supplied by means of a wick 10, Fig. 1, or by means of a bath 24, Fig. 5, into which the roller dips, or by means of a feed device delivering to the upper part or rising side of the roller. The roller may be provided with means for retarding its motion, for example, with a friction device, or with vanes 20, Fig. 3, which act as an air brake or are arranged to dip into liquid 21 or to be acted on by an air jet; or the retarding devices described in Specification 329,620, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], may be employed. The liquids to be used may be any of those mentioned in Specifications 327,740, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], and 355,652 for varying the lustre and other properties of the filaments, or they may be adapted to soften the filaments preparatory to a stretching operation as is described in Specification 342,712; and for such latter use it is preferred that the rotation of the roller shall be retarded as in the manner above referred to in order to prevent the stretch extending back to the spinning nozzle, further devices to this end being the placing of the roller to the side of the spinning cabinet and the lapping of the filaments round the roller. When stretching it is convenient to employ a drawing roller of conical form, the narrower end being used when starting and the filaments being subsequently transferred to the larger diameter.
