Abstract

<PICT:0569154/IV/1> Apparatus for liquid treatment of the nature set forth in Specification 568,893, of a running length of a single or multiple strand filament comprises a pointed member having a guideway which directs the filament substantially through the point, and a supply channel delivering liquid into the guideway above the point; there may be a further filament guide, spaced from the first, which serves to wipe surplus liquid from the filament and divert it to a drip-receptacle, and between the two guides a connecting body so shaped as to convey drips from the point to said receptacle. In the form shown, the filament travels vertically or obliquely, either upwards or downwards, along a groove 7 in a guide element 4 terminating in a point 14, and liquid is introduced into the groove through a supply bore 9. A body 2, channelled at 3 to receive drips from the point 14, connects the element 4 to a filament guide 11 which wipes surplus liquid from the filament and diverts it to a receptacle (not shown), discharging to the liquid supply or to waste. The body may have a dovetail or like fitting 15 for securing it to a machine. To avoid creep of liquid from the point 14 round the outside of the pointed element when the device is made of a material such as porcelain, there is provided in the groove 7 near the point 14 a perforation 13 through which liquid leaks and joins up with that carried by the filament from the point; this provision is unnecessary if the device is made of readily-machinable material such as brass.
