Abstract
404,171. Moistening yarns &c. during winding. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd., 22, Hanover Square, London. March 27, 1933, No. 9201. Convention date, March 26, 1932. [Class 120 (ii).] In the application of treating liquids to yarns, threads, &c. the speed of which varies during the application, e.g. during winding, the amount of liquid applied per unit length is kept constant by moving the line of contact with a surface wetted by the liquid into a different plane to vary the length of contact. In the apparatus shown, the thread A is led over a revolving felt &c. cone 2 dipping into a trough 1 containing the liquid to be applied. The thread is supported by guides 5, 6 carried by a bridge-piece 4 having a horizontal arm 7 secured by a lock screw 8 to a member 9 adapted to slide on a guide at the side of the trough, the mounting being such that the thread can be set at the desired inclination to the axis of the cone. Reciprocation of the slide 9 is effected by a lever pivoted at 14 and connected by a link 18 to the slide. One arm of the lever carries a thread guide 13 which is pressed into contact with the winding spool by a weight 16 carried by the other arm 15 of the lever so that, as the size of the spool increases, the bridge-piece and the thread are moved toward the larger end of the cone 2. Motion is imparted to the lever by means not shown to produce the form of spool required. The invention may be applied to the application of oils, sizing or colouring liquids to yarns or threads of any origin, e.g. to the treatment with aqueous swelling-agents of threads formed of cellulose derivatives, such as cellulose acetate.
