Abstract

1,131,748. Glass filaments. OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORP. 15 Aug., 1966, No. 36445/66. Heading C1M. [Also in Division D1] Streams of glass fibres 20, Fig. 1, issuing from orifices are gathered into a strand 22 whilst they are being attenuated by means of a driven wheel 30, the strand 22 contacting not more than 90 degrees of the peripheral surface of the wheel 30. The wheel 30 delivers the strand at a constant rate to the winding means 20 that winds the strand at a predetermined tension substantially less than the tension imposed on the strand by the attenuating wheel 30. The glass fibres 20 initially pass over a felt pad 25 impregnated with coating, lubricating or sizing liquid. The fibres 20 are then gathered into a strand 22 and passed over a traversing mechanism 27 before being attenuated by the driven wheel 30. The winding means may be driven by an electric motor having a small but constant torque sufficient to provide the necessary tension to take up the strand supplied by the wheel 30. Additional liquid may be supplied by a nozzle 31.
