Abstract

<PICT:0563296/IV/1> <PICT:0563296/IV/2> A device for guiding and supporting threads or filaments during treatment with liquids comprises a roller over which the thread is guided in a number of turns with progressive movement from one end to the other and upon which it is treated with liquids, and the roller is provided with one or more interrupted ribs or grooves for the purpose of confining each liquid treatment to a definite zone on the roller. The device may be used in the manufacture of artificial silk threads or filaments which are treated with acid and then with wash water and finally dried. The gaps in the ribs or grooves facilitate the passage of the thread from one side to the other, particularly during the initial leading of the thread round the roller. The ribs or grooves may be arranged in pairs and there may be more than one gap in each. The ribs or grooves may be formed in the manufacture of the roller or ribs may be attached subsequently. A split ring of springy material may be caused to grip the cylindrical roller by elastic contraction. As shown in Fig. 1, two gapped flanges 1, 2 are provided on roller 3 with their gaps arranged in a line inclined to the axis of the roller. The rib or ribs may be convex or prismatic in section and may be chamfered on one or both sides so that the thread is led smoothly through the gap. As shown in Fig. 3, two ribs are provided with the gaps at opposite sides of the roller. One rib may be placed at the end of the acid zone and the other may be placed two-thirds of the distance along the wash water zone. The flanges may lie in a plane at right angles to the axis of the roller or they may be arranged helically. To effect the forwarding of the thread, the latter may be passed around two rollers set askew relatively to one another, or around a pair of rollers and a bar.
