Abstract

594,381. Variable-speed gearing. DEAN, SMITH, & GRACE, Ltd., PRIDGEON, H., and BINNS, A. June 29, 1945, No. 16592. [Class 80(ii)] Variable-speed gearing for screw-cutting and like machines comprises a driving shaft 2 carrying an axially slidable pinion 6 meshing with any one of eccentrically mounted gear wheels 8 freely rotatable on a fixed shaft 3, and in turn meshing with gear wheels 9 fixed on a driven shaft 4. The gear wheels 8 are mounted so that their pitch lines are in alignment at points in a line adjacent to and parallel with shaft 2, to allow the selector pinion 6 carried by bracket 14 to be slid axially through sprocket and chain mechanism 17 by means of a control knob 18, to engage different trains to drive the shaft 4 at different speeds, one of the sprockets 17 being secured to the knob 18 and the other eccentrically mounted for belt tensioning purposes. An indicating cursor 19 on bracket 14, and a scale 20 are completely enclosed by a transparent window 21. Other speeds for a shaft 5 may be obtained by a sliding clutch and gears 10, 11, 12, or through sliding gears 22, 23 and a gear 13.
