Abstract

590,507. Thermionic valves. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Sept. 25, 1944, No. 18316. Convention date, Jan. 30, 1943. [Class 39 (i)] In an electron. discharge device of the type described in Specification 590,500 comprising an anode 9 with a cylindrical bore 10 enclosing a grid 12 and a cathode 8, the cathode support 5 has an extension 17 inside the cavity 11 within the anode to increase the coupling between the anode and the cathode. Alternatively, the extension 17 may comprise a disc or a sphere ; in this case the cavity 11 is hemispherical. The envelope comprises insulating portions 2, 3, separated by a copper ring-like member 4 which supports the grid structure 12. The grid comprises parallel bars and completely surrounds the cathode except for the extension 17. The anode may be formed from a solid block of metal, preferably copper and grooves 15 are bored in it to aid the dissipation of heat. The valve is used in conjunction with coaxial-line oscillatory circuits 18, 19. Coupling between these circuits externally to the valve may take place through slots 33 in the partition 26.
