Abstract
552,183. Thermionic valves. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. (International Standard Electric Corporation). Nov. 28, 1941, No. 15344. [Class 39 (i)] The anode structure of thermionic valves comprises an elongated member 1, Fig. 1, having a portion 2 extending inside the envelope and provided with a cup-shaped cavity 2a forming the anode, and an external portion 3 which is adapted for cooling during operation of the valve. The part 3 may have a central flue and radial triangular fins, or a solid core with longitudinal radial fins, or may have means for circulating through a cooling fluid. The member 1 is sealed to the insulating part of the envelope by a sleeve 4 with tapered edge. The cathode and grid are carried by the opposite end of the envelope and are housed in the anode cavity. The grid consists of support wires 8 and wires wound in the usual way, and terminates in a part 9 of cup shape ; it is carried by a ring 7 threaded into a metal sleeve 6 with tapered edges sealed to the insulating portions 5, 11 of the envelope. The cathode consists of two helical filaments 15, 16 of thoriated tungsten wound in opposite directions. In an alternative arrangement, the internal and external parts of the anode structure may be made separate and secured together by a gas tight joint. In a further modification, the anode structure 53, Fig. 6, is secured in a sleeve 52 closed at its outer end. The anode part of the structure may be made of molybdenum or tantalum or of copper lined with molybdenum or tantalum. The anode cavity may have two parts 54, 55 of different internal diameter, and the diameter and thickness of the cavity walls may vary so as to give the required temperature gradient in the anode structure.
