Abstract

588,284. Cooling systems for engines. LINDE AIR PRODUCTS CO. Feb. 8, 1945, No. 3178. Convention date, Nov. 11, 1943. [Class 64 (iii)] A liquid cooling circuit for an internal-combustion engine 10 comprising a radiator 14 and a pump 18, has a static reservoir 30 connected by the pipe 54 to a point of low pressure (e.g., a venturi 22 as shown) in the primary circuit. To maintain the temperature of the reservoir 30 above that of the liquid in the venturi, an expansion tank 28 through which is a partial flow of coolant from the engine 10, encloses the reservoir 30. In this way cavitation at the pump entrance is avoided. There is no liquid flow through the tank 30, the pressure inside which is controlled by an adjustable valve 52. The expansion tank 28 serves to de-aerate the coolant and pass it via pipe 32 to the static reservoir 30. The low pressure point may be pitot or orifice, or the pipe 54 may be joined directly to the pump 18. The static reservoir 30 may be heated by exhaust gases or an electric heater if desired.
