Abstract
Spent electrolyte from a silver plating bath containing free cyanide is regenerated by introduction of metallic silver in the presence of oxygen or a gas containing oxygen. The bath may consist of silver cyanide, potassium or sodium cyanide, potassium or sodium carbonate and potassium or sodium hydroxide to bring the pH value between 13.2 and 14. In the apparatus shown electrolyte is withdrawn from the plating tank 12 (see Group XXXVI) and driven by a pump 24 to a spray head 25 at the top of a tower 11 open to the air and having a perforated base supporting silver shot 26, the electrolyte returning to the tank 12 by overflow chamber 28 and pipe 29. In a modification the tower 11 is closed at the top and supplied with oxygen from a cylinder. In a further modification two <PICT:0587608/III/1> or more towers each closed and supplied with oxygen are provided; these communicate at the base with common overflow chamber containing a float actuating the switch of a pump for returning the electrolyte to the plating tank.ALSO:An alloy for use as an anode in electrolysis contains 14.5 per cent. silicon, 0.8 per cent. carbon, 0.35 per cent. manganese and balance iron.
