Abstract

PURPOSE: To let H2S be evolved only when necessary at the small-scale use of H2S without requiring any special ancillary equipment by flowing current while allowing S powder to suspend to the acidic catholyte in the cathode chamber of a diaphragm type electrolytic cell.
CONSTITUTION: While S powder having grain size of about 1 mm or under is being suspended, usually 50 to 300 g/l in the acidic catholyte using a diaphragm such as ion exchange membrane or the like and using, e.g., sulfuric acid solution for electrolyte, current is flowed to allow H2S to evolve from the inside of the cathode chamber. At this time the cathode reaction is expressed by S+2H++2e= H2S, the anode reaction by 2H2O= 4H++O2+4e and the overall reaction by the following formula: 2S+2H2O=2H2S+O2.
