Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound, useful as a starting material of perfumes, in high yield without the formation of by-products, by repeating the following processes: electrolytic oxidation of cerous nitrate into ceric nitrate and oxidation of p-tert-butyltoluene with ceric nitrate.
CONSTITUTION: Water containing nitrate ion or a mixture of water and a lower fatty acid is charged in the cathode cell, and a mixture of cerous (ammonium) nitrate, water and lower fatty acid in the anode cell. The cells are separated from each other with a permeably membrane, pref. an ion exchange membrane etc. The mixture is electrolyzed to give a mixture of the lower fatty acid and water containing ceric (ammonium) nitrate. Using the solution containing ceric nitrite, p-tert- butyltoluene is oxidized at 50W120°C to give the objective compound. Ceric salt is regenerated by the electrolytic oxidation of the solution containing cerous nitrate after separation of the objective compound.
