Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain alpha-phenylglycine easily without resorting to complicated processes of conventional methods by reducing electrolytically benzonitrile and CO2 in the cathode compartment in the presence of aluminum chloride and HCl , using an electrolytic cell with a cation exchange membrane.
CONSTITUTION: Benzonitrile and CO2 in the cathode compartment of an electrolytic cell consisting of a cathode, a cathode compartment, an anode, an anode compartment, a cation exchange diaphragm for separation, etc., are reduced electrolytically under a proper eleloctrolysis condition using an approx. 0.1W4N aluminum chloride solution and HCl where an aprotic polar organic solvent containing a quaternary ammonium salt of p-toluenesulfonic acid as a supporting electrolyte is used in the anode compartment. Thus, alpha-phenyl-glycine which is useful as an intermediate for medicines etc. can be easily obtained without resorting to complicated processes by a method entirely different from conventional methods, as shown in the formula.
