Abstract
PURPOSE:To check bubble troubles in the cathode chamber liquid with less power consumption by utilization of reaction energy and reduction in the cathode overvoltage through oxidation of H2 by a gas containing O2 at a specified rate to eliminate actual production of H2 gas. CONSTITUTION:At least in a part of the anode, an anode chamber is isolated with a diaphragm while at least in a part of the cathode, a cathode chamber is isolated with a diaphragm. The anode chamber is filled with a solution of alkaline metal salt while the cathode chamber with a cathode chamber liquid. The cathode, of a breathing construction, comes into contact with the cathode chamber liquid on the surface facing the anode while in contact with gas containing oxygen at a rate of 30 to 60 VOL% on the other side. An electrolyte cell of such arrangement is used. The cathode uses a porous body, such as soft steel and Ni plated with a metal more precious than iron, to which powder of Pt, Ir and Os and carbon are added with a binder. The gas containing O2 at above-mentioned concentration is available at a relative low cost.
