Abstract

PURPOSE:To save consumption electric power required for electrolysis, by employing a porous gas diffusion electrode as a cathode, and performing electrolysis while supplying air to said cathode. CONSTITUTION:As a cathode use is made of the gas diffusion electrode 1 which comprises catalyst layers 8, 8' of a mixture of a binder and active carbon powder carrying about 1% of platinum catalyst, an aggregate 9 of an expanded metallic tantalum plated with gold, and a porous polyethylene tetrafluoride film 10. The cathode 1 and an anode 2 of graphite are immersed in an electrolyte 3 of an aqueous manganese sulfate solution and sulfuric acid in an electrolytic cell 7, with the catalyst layers 8 of the cathode 1 in contact with the electrolyte 3 and with the porous polyethylene tetrafluoride film 10 in contact with a gas chamber 4 to which air is introduced. The gas diffusion electrode 1 would not pass the electrolyte 3 but a gas. The electrolysis according to the arrangement would cut approximately 32.5% of consumed electric power.
