[Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Groups V and XXXVI] Fig. 1: A high-frequency heater comprises a tube 41 of low-loss ceramic material such as rutile, having its exterior surface 49 metallised and constituting the high-tension electrode. The earth electrode is a metal tube 48 between which and the tube 41 material being heated is forced by the screw 2. An electric coupling C, [see Group XXXVI], extends through a tube 44 which encloses the heater. The earth electrode may be faced with heatresisting insulating material in which heat is generated by the highfrequency field (to prevent chilling of material being heated). Fig. 2 shows a modification in which the high-tension electrode is the metallised inner surface 149 of a rutile tube 141, the earth electrode being an outer metal tube 144.
