Abstract
1,240,903. Microwave heating. J. H. A. SOULIER. 26 March, 1969 [29 March, 1968], No. 15872/69. Heading H5H. Dielectric coatings, e.g. on a cable, are heated for vulcanizing or cross-linking in a microwave heater which comprises a tubular conducting casing 9 closed at its ends by conducting members 14, 15; at least two aligned conducting tubes 10, 11 spaced apart at their ends and arranged coaxially within the casing 9; means for passing the coated materials through the tubes so that they are dielectrically heated in the space 18 between the ends of tubes 10, 11; and a microwave generator 6 coupled to the coaxial waveguide formed by the tubes 10, 11 and casing 9. As shown, a wire 1 is coated in a device 3, 5 with a coating 2 prior to heating in the microwave heater. The microwave generator 6, e.g. a magnetron is coupled to the coaxial waveguide 9, 10, 11 by a rectangular waveguide 8 as shown or by a coaxial connector, Fig. 3 (not shown). The tubes are lined with P.T.F.E. liners 21 which reduce friction. Different sized replaceable liners 21 permit adaption of the heater to different sized cables. Axially adjustable P.T.F.E. rings on tubes 10, 11 enable the load to be matched to the characteristic impedance of the magnetron 6. Conducting buttons 12, 13 at the ends of waveguide 8 and conducting rings 14, 15 at the ends of casing 9 are axially adjustable for impedance matching. The device may be filled with nitrogen and a coated conductor may pass through a series of such devices.
