Abstract

873,082. Waveguides. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 28, 1960 [May 1, 1959], No. 14940/60. Class 40(8) [Also in Group XI] An oven for radio-frequency heating comprises a u.h.f. generator 1 and a waveguide system 3 in which the output circuit of the generator is connected to the waveguide system to guide the r.f. energy towards an output opening 4, together with a conveyer belt 6 for transporting articles to be heated, e.g. single-baked biscuits 5, across the said opening 4, wherein the waveguide system 3 is formed by a parabolic cylindrical surface 9 and two parallel boundary sufaces 10 and 11 at right-angles thereto, wherein a linear radiator 12 is disposed in the focal line of the surface 9 and a reflector 18 is disposed between the radiator 12 and the opening 4 to reflect direct radiation from the radiator 12 in the direction of the opening 4 towards the surface 9, and wherein the conveyer belt 6 is guided in a direction which is substantially at right-angles to the parallel boundary surfaces 10 and 11 of the waveguide system. As shown, the generator 1 is a magnetron connected to the radiator 12 by a coaxial line 2 provided with load matching devices 8. A trough 15 closing the waveguide system is partially filled with energy-absorbing material, and passages 14 for the conveyer belt 6 attenuate any stray energy emanating from the waveguide system. A plurality of reflector rods or a screen may be substituted for the reflector rod 18 if a further improvement of the uniformity of the electromagnetic field at the opening 14 is required, e.g. for drying tissues.
