Abstract

1,128,004. Microwave heating. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 24 March, 1966 [27 March, 1965], No. 13051/66. Heading H5H. In order to achieve uniform heating of sheet material passing through a slotted waveguide, the wavelength of the high-frequency energy is continuously varied by mechanical means. The apparatus comprises a serpentine waveguide 3 slotted throughout its length in such a manner that a sheet of material 11 may pass through successive sections of the waveguide in a direction parallel to the electric vector of the wave. The halves 8, 9 of the waveguide defined by the slot 7 are mechanically independent except in the reg ons of the input and output couplings 4, 5. They are oscillated relatively to each other in a direction at right-angles to the electric vector by means of a cam-and-follower arrangement 15 to 20, the waveguide being sufficiently flexible to allow this. In a modification (Fig. 4, not shown), the sections of waveguide are provided with elongated members (22) of conductive or dielectric material arranged one on either side of the sheet (11) and continuously movable towards and away from the sheet. The dimensions of the waveguide are such that the change of wavelength with mechanical displacement is as large as possible. The displacement may be sinusoidal and the mechanical system may be resonant. The bends between the straight sections of the serpentine waveguide are preferably one halfwavelength long. In the embodiment described, the channels forming the waveguide halves are closed by protective sheets (10) of dielectric material. The output end of the guide is connected to an absorptive load 6.
