Abstract

1,099,357. Microwave heating. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 24, 1965 [June 2, 1964], No. 22798/64. Heading H5H. Sausages or the like are heated in a microwave oven by being arranged with their axes parallel to the electric field, and with a conductive member adjacent either end of each sausage, whereby non-uniform heating near the ends due to distortion of the field is reduced. The sausages are passed through the oven within a duct 16, Fig. 4, of dielectric material extending between openings 11, provided with outwardly projecting quarter wavelength screening flanges 15, located in the pair of broad faces of the waveguide. They are carried through the duct on a PTFE conveyer 17 having spaced transverse ribs 19, the sausages being received on the flat sections 18 defined by the successive ribs, and the conductive members being constituted by metal rods 20 one of which is inserted within each rib, the enclosing rib material preventing contact with, and consequential burning of, the ends of the sausage. Uniformity of heating in the sausage in directions transverse to its axis is ensured, for the axial direction of the waveguide, either by the use of a conductive plate short circuit 13 in the waveguide at the opposite end to the source 12, or by feeding each end of the waveguide through which the conveyer passes from a common source 24 (Fig. 5, not shown) through a branched waveguide incorporating phase-shifting and matching elements (25) and (26); and for the direction perpendicular to the axes of the sausage and the waveguide, by deforming the broad sides of the waveguide inwardly in the neighbourhood of the openings for the conveyer (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown), or by fixing obstacles to the waveguide on either side of the openings. Reference is made in the Specification, as an alternative to the conveyer rib structure described above, to the use of plastic coated discs or spheres of copper positioned at the ends of the sausages.
