Abstract
584,040. Toggle stays. STRAUSSLER, N. Nov. 3, 1944, No. 21574. [Class 65 (i)] One member of the stay carries power-operated means for breaking the toggle. The two members 1, 2 are pivoted together at 3 and have facing stops 33. They are locked in the straightened condition by means of a latch 31, pivoted at 30 to member 2 and lying under the stop 33 on member 1. To break the toggle, pressure fluid is introduced at 24, flows through holes 23 to the interior of a plunger 16 and forces the latter upwards. Its first movement swings the latch clear of the stop 33 and into contact with the member 2. Further movement causes relative movement of the members about the hinge 3 to pass beyond the dead centre position. Initially air is driven by the pressure fluid out of the cylinder and plunger through a hole 28, which is then sealed by a ball 27 pressed on to its seat by a screw 29. The member 2 includes a threaded sleeve 11, clamped in position by a bolt 10, and a stem 13 with a V-block 5. The plunger 16 is returned by a spring 21 and an additional returning spring may be located within the plunger with its terminal coils of small diameter engaging threads on screws by which the tension can be adjusted.
