[Classes 80 (i) and 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XL] A gearing mechanism for enabling a driven shaft to be adjusted in angular relation to a driving shaft during rotation for use in picture telegraph machines for phasing the synchronized transmitting and receiving station motors, comprises an oppositely acting ratchet clutch with spring-pressed balls 8 between a gear ring 5 secured to a worm wheel 4 driven by a worm 3 of the driving shaft 1 and a sleeve 6 fixed on the driven shaft 2. Freely mounted on the sleeve 6 is another gear 10 of equal diameter to the gear 5 and having projections 11 arranged between the balls 8 of the ratchet clutch. The gears 5, 10 are adapted to be engaged by either of a pair of gears 14, 15 or 16, 17 these gears all being of the same diameter but gears 14 and 17 having one tooth more than gears 15 and 16 so that according to which pair is engaged by rocking the carrier member 12 the gear 10 is driven slightly slower or faster than the gear 5. This results in the projections 11 disengaging one or other of the sets of balls 8 of the ratchet clutch to slow down or speed up the sleeve 6 and driven shaft 2 until the desired adjustment is effected when the carrier member 12 is set in its neutral position in which the ratchet clutch drives solid.
