Abstract
949,938. Variable-speed ratchet gear; universal Joints. R. GIRARDELLI. July 7, 1960 [July 9, 1959], No. 23823/60. Headings F2D and F2U. A steplessly variable ratchet gear uses cyclic variations of parallel univeral joints 9 to control the speed of a carrier 42 of stepped planets L, M meshing suns B, N respectively on main driving and driven shafts 8, 45. The universal joints comprise two or more joints of the kind having transverse pins 23 on one member engaging circular grooves 26 in the other, the joints being equiphased circumferentially to produce phased fluctuations. The common input 11 of the joints is driven by the main driving shaft 8 through bevel gears A, D, E, F, which permit angular adjustment of the joints the outputs 18, 181 of which are connected through friction ratchets 39 and a gear pair G, H to the planet carrier 42. The gear sizes are such that in the aligned position of the joints 9, carrier 42 rotates forwards and the driven shaft 45 is stationary. As the joints are adjusted angularly the rotation of the carrier 42 is restrained in correspondence with the minimum instantaneous velocities of the joints 9; thus retarding the carrier and causing the driven shaft 45 to be driven with gradually increasing speed.
