Abstract
582,465. Pistons. WAINWRIGHT, J. E. May 16, 1944, No. 9333. [Class 122 (i)] To reduce wear in a piston 3, Fig. 1, of the type in which the gudgeon pin is off-set to the piston axis a-a the cross-sectional dimensions of the piston are progressively reduced from the normal at or near the gudgeon pin axis to less than normal at one or both ends. The piston 3 may be substantially barrel-shaped, Fig. 1, or lands L<3>, L4, Fig. 5, may be formed by the removal of predetermined amounts of metal from diametrically opposite sides of each end. Removal of metal from both sides of each end would result in a cross-section substantially elliptical in shape with the major axis parallel to the gudgeon pin axis. The invention may be applied to a slide valve.
