Abstract
582,110. Hoppers. WOOD, D. H., and ROE, H. J. Aug. 17, 1944, No. 15772. [Class 78 (i)] The discharge opening of a hopper for finely divided material, such as core sand, is closed'by a conical member which houses within itself a means for vibrating it. A cone 23 is secured upon the lower end of a tube 24, the upper end of which is connected by a ball-and-socket joint 28 to the piston rod 29 of a cylinder 30. Pressure fluid, preferably compressed air, is admitted to the cylinder by pipes 32, 33 and to the tube 24 through a flexible member 35. A conical shield 27 is provided above the cone 23 in order that sand shall not lodge upon it. The outlet of the hopper has a groove 18 cut in it to receive a ring 19 of rubber or other flexible material which forms a seat for the cone 23. The lower wall of this groove is of larger diameter than the upper. A vibrator 37, operated by the compressed air supplied to the tube 24, is mounted within a heavy cradle 38 at the lower endof the cone. Gauze, or other perforated material, is secured over the lower face of the cradle.
